Hanalani Supplies Help Others

“We were quite overwhelmed with your generosity!”, said Missions Director Robin Fox after receiving hundreds of school supplies from Hanalani Schools.  Near the end of last year, boxes were placed in the hallways to collect unwanted school supplies.  These donated materials, along with out-of-service textbooks were donated to missionaries and Christian schools in the Philippines, Japan, Nepal, and India!  Thank you students for your support of missions abroad. As Fox pointed out, the supplies, “gives us an open door to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many unsaved peoples”.

For more information about this program, contact Cindy De Lizo at extension 122.

SAC East Wing Open Today

Ah, the first day of school.  It’s a time to unwrap your school supplies, see where you’re sitting, find out what books you’ll be reading, and of course a time to make new friends.

With the start of the first day of school also comes the opening of the new SAC East Wing.  If you haven’t seen it – it’s really impressive!  The new wing includes… (a) three new classrooms, (b) a college and academic counselor’s office, (c) an elementary art work room, (d) an upper school art work classroom), (e) and the new “The Learning Center” (TLC).

Summer Students Create Websites

While the math department had cities popping up in their class, the computer department had websites appearing!  Students in Mr. Stone’s “Cool Computer Stuff” created their own websites this summer. The websites were created during the 6-week long summer course which taught students the basics of XHTML and CSS.  For many, this was their first experience with either technology.  After 4 weeks of learning, the students then embarked on their own project: Conceptualizing a website and creating it over the next 2 weeks.  Final website projects were judged by Hanalani staff and alumni.  And the winners are….

First Place – Nathan Chun, “Make a Website”
Second Place –  Ei Meren Acierto & Ku’ulei Yamamoto, “Pinoy Pride”
Third Place – Catherine Armstrong & Chalyna Kehler, “Eat My Bubbles”

Great job students!

Math Students Build Calculable City

Cities are popping up all over Ms. Wong’s math class this summer.  To really bring the ideas of area and volume ‘alive’, Ms. Wong’s class constructed their own cities.  The colorful models were created in class as a group project.  After finishing the city, each group then had to calculated the volume occupied by the buildings.  Looking closely, one will notice that the groups went far beyond just making cities, meticulously adding many details of daily life, such as shopping centers, fast food restaurants, and traffic jams.  Perhaps for these students of math, the challenge isn’t to think outside the box, but to measure its volume!

Hanalani 'Rolls' Out New Transporation

Superintendent Mark Sugimoto and Upper School Principal Winston Sakurai proudly stand in front of the school’s newest acquisition: a school bus.  The new mini-busses are part of Hanalani’s improvements for transportation for the 2008-2009 school year, and were acquired to help keep transportation costs down for parents.  In addition to lowering prices, the new busses come fully equipped with many comfort and safety features, to keep our students both happy and secure.

So what’s got Mr. Sugimoto so excited?  It’s the school’s first time, in all 54 years of Hanalani history, that a brand new vehicle has been acquired.  Expect to see two of these mint condition vehicles around campus in the very near future.

Hanalani.org Updates -- New Year Info and Calendar

The Hanalani web team has made some additions to the website which will be helpful to parents and supporters of the school.

First, all of the information for the new school year (included in the June new school year packet) is now available on the website.  What you need to know on the first day, your child’s supply list, information about uniforms, how to drive in the parking lot: it’s all there!
New School Year Info Page

Second, the calendar has been updated.  The previous calendar only showed the months of the school year that were remaining, and in a simple list format.  The new calendar now allows individuals to move back and forward in time to see the dates they’re looking for.  It also displays these events in an actual calendar type of format.

Additionally, we’ve also provided the calendar events in a number of formats to either download and print or synchronize with calendar software that you’re already using.  A big advantage to the new synchronization link is that it allows you to synchronize the entire calendar at once, instead of having to import events one by one.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet turned in your Smart Tuition Form (required for your child to attend), we’ve made those forms available online.  They can be accessed on either the Forms Page or the Tuition Page.
