Student Orientation Appointments

Orientation appointments are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 11 and 12. Students and parents will visit the classroom and meet with the teacher for 30 minutes. Students should bring their school supplies to put in their cubbies at that time. It is not necessary for students to wear their uniforms to the orientation. Appointment day and time will be mailed at a later date.

First Day

The first day of school, Wednesday, August 13, will be a regular, full day with Before- and After-School Care. For the first few days, it is often easier for first-time students (especially K3 students) to be picked up immediately after school rather than staying in After-School Care. After the children are acquainted with the school, the transition to After-School Care is much easier.

Early Childhood Parent Orientation

Early Childhood (EC) Parent Orientation will be held on August 21, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Student Activity Center (SAC). After the meeting in the SAC, parents will meet as a group with their child’s teacher to discuss items pertaining to the individual class. At least one parent of each student must attend Parent Orientation. This evening is for parents only.

Student Supplies

Students may bring their supplies to the student orientation appointments. The supply list is included in this mailing. For your convenience, supply packets for each grade level are available in the campus store, “By the Book.” Individual supplies will also be available if you are having difficulty finding a particular item in the community.

Please remember that items with super heroes (i.e., Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, etc.) or Pokemon characters are not allowed at school. This includes school supplies, shoes, and clothing.

Footwear

K3/K4 students must wear socks and fully enclosed athletic shoes with non-tie fastenings (Velcro, zipper, etc. Stretchy, non-tie shoelaces are also acceptable.)

K5 girls may also wear sandals with back straps; however, athletic shoes and socks will be required on P.E. days. K5 boys must wear shoes and socks daily. Shoes with shoelaces are allowed for K5 students.

No particular brand or color of shoes is required. It is best to select shoes that have a sole with good traction, avoiding shoes with slick soles.

Snacks and Lunches

A morning snack of milk or juice and fruit, vegetables, or crackers, etc., will be provided for K3/K4 students. K5 students may bring a nutritious snack for the morning snack time. Afternoon snack will be available for EC students staying in ASC. A school lunch menu is sent home at the beginning of each month and is also available on the school’s website.

School lunch will be available on the first day of school. Lunches may be purchased with lunch coupons only. Coupon books will be available for purchase at the kitchen starting June 2 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Coupons allow the purchase of a complete meal, including entree, fruit, vegetable, and milk.

Physical Examination, Immunizations, and Tuberculin Clearance

All new students must submit a completed Student Health Record (HA-16) which includes a physical examination, all required immunizations, and a tuberculin clearance. The physical examination and tuberculin clearance must be dated:

  • Between August 13, 2007 and August 13, 2008

All returning K5 students also must have their Student Health Record (HA-16) updated and dated as listed above.

Students will not be permitted to attend classes until all medical records have been submitted. All immunizations must be up to date and include the following doses:

K3/K4 Students:

  • 3 DTaP or DPT/Td (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
  • 3 Polio (IPV or OPV)
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • 1 MMR (measles, mumps & rubella)
  • 1 Varicella (chickenpox)
  • At least 3 HIB (haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • K5 Students:

    • 5 DTaP or DPT/Td (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
    • 4 Polio (IPV or OPV)
    • 3 Hepatitis B
    • 2 MMR (measles, mumps & rubella)
    • 1 Varicella (chickenpox)

Time periods between doses must meet the Hawaii Department of Health requirements. If you have any questions, contact the Hawaii Immunization Program at 586-8332.

Parents of students in the Early Childhood Division of Hanalani Schools who would like to chaperone field trips or help out in the classroom are required to have a negative tuberculin clearance on file in the EC Office. For first-time EC parents, the clearance must be dated within one year.

    New School Year Preparation

As you prepare your child for school, help him or her to know what to expect such as meeting new friends, lunch, rest/nap, learning centers, group times, and activities to do.

Prepare your child for the new school schedule. Your child’s adjustment to school will be smoother if a schedule of wake-up time, lunch, rest/nap, and bedtime has been established a couple of weeks before school starts. We will have lunch around 11:00 a.m. Naptime for K3/K4 students is at 12:00 p.m., and K5 students rest/nap at around 12:30 p.m.

To prepare your child for school routines, teach your child to walk inside the house rather than run. If your child will be bringing a home lunch, have your child use the lunchbox and containers before school starts so he or she will be familiar with them. Encourage him or her to be a careful listener and to always follow your directions. Be sure your child knows how to get bottoms on and off for toileting and how to clean up afterwards, including always washing his or her hands.

Keep in mind that your child may need more sleep after starting school. A healthy breakfast before school will help your child’s brain to function best and provide the needed energy for a busy day of learning.

Be sure to prepare yourself too. Your excitement and confidence in your child’s ability to adjust to the new classroom, classmates, teacher, and challenges will help assure your child of success.
