Royals take two XC wins at CORP

Harder and Au lead the way as the Royals Host the ILH at CORP

The Hanalani Cross-Country team continued their success this past weekend, improving several season times and winning two out of six possible races.

Freshman Kevin Au won the Boys Junior Varsity Race, crossing the line in 19:38, beating second place by nearly 30 seconds. Junior Ben Scully was next for the Royals, crossing in 21:11, good for 12th place. Nicholas Laurion (70th, 23:43), Ariel Mercado (144th, 30:55), and Patrick Mahimer (145th, 31:03) rounded out the Junior Varsity team. They finished 7th overall with 203 points. Iolani won the JV race with 29 points.

Junior Adam Harder won the boys Varsity race, crossing the line in 17:06. It was Adam’s second victory in a row. Sophomore Ben Hodge ran close behind him, finishing 4th in 17:48. Corban Hodge (37th, 20:31), Seth Williams (58th, 21:33), and Logan Castro (60th, 21:35) rounded out the team. The boys finished 4th with 104 points. Iolani won a close race with Punahou, 41 to 42.

“Our high school boys competed much better than last week,” said Coach Jeremy Honold. “With us hosting this meet, they really took on the mindset of defending their ‘home turf’. Great job to our two boys for winning their races, and the rest of our runners all ran season best times. Looking forward to coming back here at the State Championship."

On the girls’ side, Kylie Castro was the lone JV runner for the Royals. She finished 5th in 24:34. Le Jardin’s Aya Lewis won the race in 22:05.

Girls Varsity ran four runners this weekend, one short for a team score. Junior Jordan Pomeroy led the way, finishing in 14th for a season best time of 22:45. Emma Toyama (35th, 24:38), Kylie Morisaki (42nd, 25:52), and Andersen Matsusaka (49, 27:14) competed. There were 60 runners total.

“My observation was the girls’ race was a little strange. The number of racers seemed a little low, which changed the feel of the race. Good to see Jordan mix in the top 15. But I don’t want to take anything away from the other girls. Every one of them ran well, and we will look to now work together to improve our times”

Not to be outdone by their High School teammates, Intermediate also competed in a 2 mile race. This was the first race of the season for the girls. With four runners in a 109 person race, Saige Kurihara was the leader for the Royals, finishing in 61st with an 18:15. Kalea Kalahele (71st, 19:11), Railey Okamura (93rd, 20:21) and Maya Brantley (98th, 21:23) all ran their season debuts.

For the intermediate boys, Austin Oguma led the way for the boys, finishing in 35th with a time of 14:14. Ty Gonzales finished just behind him in 14:16. Other runners included Jourdan Hung (58th, 14:44), Christian Yagin (59th, 14:45), Andrew Marvin (77th, 15:29), Dane Fujiwara (79th, 15:31), Aidan Almazan (131, 16:37), Drew Young (138, 16:54), Sammy Laurion (175, 19:34), and Alex Fellers (179, 22:26). The boys’ team finished 7th overall.

“I thought intermediate ran amazing. Both teams bunched up and ran together, and when you have multiple runners competing with one another and moving up together, typically good things happen. Our boys’ team is looking very good in particular, with practically no one running by themselves. With more experience, sky is the limit.”

Next week the Royals will compete in the Iolani Inviational at Kualoa Ranch
