Oguma Podiums, Intermediate runners set new bests at Iolani Intermediate Invitational

The Hanalani Intermediate Cross-Country teams competed in their separate invitational this Friday, held at Kapiolani Park.

This was an invitational for all middle school programs around the island, and the races were broken down by grade level.

The Royals had three 7th grade girls compete in the race. Railey Okamura led the way, finishing in 25th with a time of 15:45, a new personal best. Saige Kurihara finished 38th in 17:14, and Maya Brantley finished 55th in 18:04.

For the 8th grade girls race, two Royals competed. Kalea Kalahele was the first Royals finisher, finishing 54th in a time of 17:00. Zoie Stevers followed behind in 79th with a 20:23. Both were lifetime bests for the girls.

“This race brings out a lot of confidence, which is what our girls ran with”, said Head Coach Jeremy Honold. “With a flat, fast course, we had the opportunity for some fast times. Good to see our girls take advantage.”

The middle school boys had a scoring team in both the 7th and 8th grade race. 7th grader Austin Oguma led the way for the 7th grade boys, finishing in 10th, good for a 12:45 two mile. Jourdan Hung was the next Royal, crossing in 13:48 and 38th place. Andrew Marvin (54, 14:22), Alex Fellers (128, 20:13), and Sammy Laurion (130, 20:24) was the scoring team. The Royals finished 8th out of 11 teams.

The 8th grade boys finished the day, with Ty Gonzales crossing in 27th place with a time of 13:25. Teammate Christian Yagin was close behind, finishing in 29th with a time of 13:29. Kyler Nakayama (62, 14:15), Dane Fujiwara (65, 14:16), Makana Potter (81, 14:38), Aidan Almazan (85, 14:42), and Drew Young (137, 15:55) rounded out the team. The 8th grade boys finished 9th out of 15 teams.
“7th grade really stepped up today. Great job to Austin for getting his first top 10 finish. But all of them ran lifetime bests. Our eighth graders ran solid as well, now we prepare for championships”.
