Grade 2 students got their hands dirty helping to clean up the Ala Wai Canal!
Members from the Genki Ala Wai Project shared the science behind the Genki balls and empowered our students to collaborate in restoring the Ala Wai Canal’s ecosystem through bioremediation. Bioremediation is the introduction of living organisms to enable an environmentally friendly means of removing pollutants from soil and water without negatively impacting or altering the natural ecosystem.
Genki balls are tennis ball sized mud balls containing soil, rice bran, molasses, water, and effective microorganisms. The 200 Genki balls our students made will eat away the sludge at the bottom of the canal and provide a cleaner environment for the marine life.
MAHALO, Genki Ala Wai Project, for empowering our students to be better stewards of the land.
