US Student Government Gains Real-World Experience in Planning Luau

Last Thursday, our Upper School (US) student government celebrated the successful results of their efforts at the 2017 Freshman/Sophomore Luau!
For the past three years, Hanalani's Upper School program has provided an annual luau for the freshman and sophomore students, with the main purpose of the event being for the sophomore class to formally welcome the freshman class to high school. The members of US student government have been given the project-based learning task to put on this event, which means that they are in charge of contacting vendors, coordinating with the kitchen for catering, handling decorations, and planning the program of events.

Chris Salter, the US student government advisor, acted as a “safety net” for the students as they gained real-world experience through planning this event. He was there to assist if there were any issues, but allowed the student leaders to ultimately "run the show." Among the many students involved, US president Kaylee Deloye ('18), and Freshman/Sophomore Luau chair Victoria Chun ('20) really helped lead this event and make it a success.

The evening was filled with musical performances by various students, multiple dance performances, games, a special slideshow, and a fire dancer performance. There was a bit of delay with the fire dancer performance, and the student government team found themselves having to “rearrange on the fly”: but ultimately, the performance went smoothly and blew everyone away! Another highlight of the evening was the welcoming lei ceremony, in which each freshman received a lei from a sophomore student.

The Hanalani ohana is proud of the US student government for the hard work and dedication that they put in for this successful event, and to each of its students who continually grow through learning opportunities in "wisdom, and stature, and favor with God and man"!
